Led by transportation officials, a new task force that is seeking renewed input from the public on an effort to widen the 710 Freeway will host its second meeting Monday night.

The virtual meeting, which will run from 5 to 7:30 p.m., will review the I-710 Corridor Project, which would add two lanes of truck traffic on either side of the freeway, and spans from Long Beach to East Los Angeles near the 60 Freeway. The project was originally intended to improve traffic safety, modernize the freeway design and accommodate growth in traffic and goods movement, especially from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

At Monday’s meeting, the task force is expected to adopt a charter and discuss topics including mobility on the corridor, air quality, freight traffic and the local communities that will be affected by the project.

Each member of the public who decides to speak will be given one minute in order to allow as many as possible to participate, according to Metro. Interpretation will be provided in Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog.

In March, the project was halted when the Environmental Protection Agency issued a letter that the project didn’t meet federal air quality standards, and it asked transportation officials to perform a particulate matter “hot-spot” analysis. Failing to complete the analysis would put the project in non-compliance with the Clean Air Act.

The Metro Board then directed Metro to suspend work on the environmental process and re-engage community members.

The 710 Task Force is charged with leading this process by focusing on equity, specifically engaging local jurisdictions and community-based organizations, along with gathering input from traditional regional transportation and freight stakeholders, according to Metro.

While there is no estimated start date for the project, the Metro Board of Directors expects to have a report of feedback and findings from the 710 Task Force by April 2022.
