Authorities ID man killed while walking on 710, say it’s unclear why he was on freeway

Authorities today identified a man who was struck by a car and killed while walking on the 710 Freeway with another man, who was also struck by the vehicle but survived.

The men were walking in the fast lane of the northbound freeway, north of Del Amo Boulevard, when they were hit by a 2005 Honda Civic about 2 a.m. Saturday, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Jose Garcia, 29, of Long Beach died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

The other man, whose name was withheld, was taken to a hospital to treat unspecified injuries. It was not known why the men were walking on the freeway.
