Tuesday’s Long Beach City Council Meeting confirmed the reappointments of Board of Harbor Commissioners Lou Ann Bynam, a Long Beach City College executive, and Doug Drummond, a former city councilmember to the board, the port announced yesterday.

While the reappointments were announced last month, Tuesday’s meeting finalized their reappointments.

“These commissioners have done outstanding jobs helping to lead the Harbor Department,” Garcia said in a statement. “Their commitment to continuing public service will provide stability and consistency to the decisions governing Long Beach’s most important economic engine. I applaud the City Council for reappointing them and honoring their contributions.”

According to a release issued by the Port of Long Beach (POLB), Bynum (vice president of the Harbor Board) and Drummond (a former board president) were appointed by former mayor Bob Foster. Commissioners usually serve six-year terms.

“I look forward to adding to the great things we have done as a Commission with the reappointment of Commissioners Bynum and Drummond,” Harbor Board President Lori Ann Guzmán said in a statement. “Thank you to the Mayor and City Council for recognizing the value of their service.”

Bynum has a master’s degree from UCLA and a bachelor’s degree from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). When she was elected to the Board of Harbor Commissioners in May 2014, it was the first time the board held a female majority. After beginning working for Long Beach City College in 1997, she rose through the ranks and is currently the executive vice president of College Advancement and Economic Development for Long Beach City College.

Drummond, who was first appointed to the board in 2011, said he will retire from his position in 2017. With a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Public Administration from CSULB and a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California, Drummond has spent almost 60 years in public service. Most notably, he was a councilmember for the Third District from 1990 to 1998 and served as California State Commissioner for the Board of Parole Hearings and Fish and Game Commissioner for Los Angeles County. He was also a member of the City of Long Beach Civil Service Commission and the Board of Directors of the Long Beach Transportation Company.
