UPDATE: 25-year-old motorcyclist killed in crash on Cherry Avenue police say

A 25-year-old motorcyclist died after colliding with an SUV near the Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach on Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.

Police identified the motorcyclist as Alejandro Vasquez of Long Beach.

Police said the crash happened around 4:40 p.m. at the intersection of Cherry Avenue and Bixby Road.

The driver of a Nissan Rogue was turning left from northbound Cherry Avenue onto westbound Bixby Road while the motorcyclist was headed south on the service road portion of Cherry Avenue, according to a statement from police.

The motorcyclist “failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with the Nissan,” police said.

Long Beach Fire Department medics tried to save the man, who was suffering from “significant injuries,” but he died at the scene, according to the LBPD. The Nissan’s driver, a 55-year-old man, was uninjured, police said. He stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, according to the department.

“At this time, neither distracted driving nor impaired driving is believed to be a factor in the collision; however, the investigation remains ongoing,” police said.
