Long Beach City Hall.

The city will open its Winter Shelter located in North Long Beach on Saturday, providing a  temporary place for the homeless from December through March.

This year’s provider is the nonprofit United States Veterans Initiative. Other year-round shelters in the city include the Samaritan House and Lydia House, operated by the Long Beach Rescue Mission, and Project Achieve and Elizabeth Anne Seton Residence, run by Catholic Charities of Los Angeles.

“The Winter Shelter Program provides much needed temporary shelter for individuals living on the streets during inclement weather,” Mayor Robert Garcia said in a statement. “The shelter not only provides a safe place to sleep, but also links individuals to services and resources to help them rebuild their lives.”

The shelter will operate daily between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. Hours may be extended in the event of rainy weather. The shelter is a closed facility; once checked into the facility, participants cannot enter or exit at-will. The shelter does not accept walk-ins; participants must be transported to and from the location from designated pick-up/drop-off areas.
