Two community members at Tuesday night’s city council meeting requested assistance in tracking down the driver in a hit-and-run collision that killed a local man on Saturday.

Gomez01Daniel Gomez, 20 [pictured left with his mother, Rosi], was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Spring and Studebaker Rd. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

“We urge the city council to issue a reward for the person that killed Danny Gomez,” community member Jorge Robles said. “Let us not let Danny Gomez’s life become another statistic in Long Beach and his case go unsolved.”

Several members of the council spoke up in favor of securing funding to find the person responsible for Gomez’s death but no exact measures have yet been proposed.

“The city has had several meetings about this area and we want to do right by the family to make sure that this is a safe area…so other tragedies like this don’t happen,” councilwoman Stacy Mungo said. “We’ve talked with our police force and a few of us have started communicating with other local jurisdictions that are usually related to putting out rewards in this kind of matter.”

Veronica Ralphs addressed the council on behalf of Gomez’s mother, pointing out that the area where the young man was hit has no sidewalks or speed bumps.

“We want … the city council to maybe put up something in that area to prevent any more accidents because another child was killed there about two years ago and he was 15,” Ralphs said. “I don’t think we can have peace until we catch the person who ran over [Danny] and left him to die like a wild animal in the street.”
