A speeding driver who may have been intoxicated crashed into the back of a Long Beach Fire Department ambulance on the 710 Freeway overnight, according to police.

The wreck, which happened around 2:07 a.m. Sunday, injured the driver and killed a female passenger in his car, the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement. Nobody in the ambulance was hurt.

Police said the driver was going northbound on Shoreline Drive where it transitions onto the 710 Freeway near Seventh Street when he crashed his 2018 Honda Civic into the back of the ambulance parked on the shoulder.

The driver was taken to a local hospital, and the woman riding in his car died at the scene, police said.

Police said they’ve arrested the driver as they continue to investigate.

“At this time, speed and intoxication appear to be factors in the collision,” they said.

Authorities have not publicly identified the woman who died.

Police identified the driver as Christian Castillas, a 27-year-old Long Beach resident.

Police said he’s being held on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony driving under the influence causing bodily injury. Bail was set at $100,000, police said.
