Police say a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash this morning on the Anaheim Street bridge over the Los Angeles River.
The crash happened at about 7:11 a.m. on westbound Anaheim Street just east of the 710 Freeway, according to Long Beach police.
An unknown vehicle struck a man in the roadway, then fled, said police spokesperson Jordan McGinley.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, McGinley said. His name and age were not immediately available.
A cleanup crew was working near the base of the bridge, just a few hundred feet from the city’s Multi-Service Center, the main intake facility for the area’s unhoused residents.
Police shut down the westbound lanes on the bridge during the investigation.
This was the city’s 36th fatal crash so far this year, a year after Long Beach recorded 53 fatal crashes — its highest total in more than a decade.
