The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner has identified the 72-year-old man fatally shot in Downtown Long Beach as Maxwell Fromm.
Police said the shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday on First Street between Lime and Alamitos avenues. Fromm died on the sidewalk, according to the medical examiner.
Officers arrested the suspect shooter nearby, police said. They identified him as 64-year-old John Higginbotham.

“The preliminary investigation indicates the victim and suspect are neighbors and known to one another,” the Long Beach Police Department said in a statement. Detectives are still investigating what motivated the shooting.
Higginbotham has been charged with murder and has not yet entered a plea, court records show. Police said he was being held on $2 million bail.
