A Los Angeles man was sentenced today to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing a 17-year-old boy in Bellflower in a Halloween 2015 drive-by shooting.

Jesus Chavez, 37, was convicted last October of the first-degree murder of Sitani Siale’uvea, as was co-defendant Brian Jesse Altamirez, 23. At the request of Altamirez’ attorney, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Olivia Rosales postponed his sentencing to June 25 at the Norwalk courthouse.

On Oct. 31, 2015, Siale’uvea was standing in the 16100 block of Bellflower Boulevard, a busy commercial street, when Chavez fired on him from a vehicle, prosecutors said. Siale’uvea was struck by multiple shotgun rounds and died at a hospital from a shot to his stomach.

Deputy District Attorney Steve Schreiner said Chavez had animosity toward the victim because of an earlier incident involving Siale’uvea’s girlfriend. The girlfriend, who was pregnant at the time, was in Chavez’s car and doing drugs, prompting Siale’uvea to bang on the windshield, urging her to stop. He damaged Chavez’ car and Chavez was determined to retaliate, the prosecutor told City News Service.

“This seemed like a really good kid,” Schreiner said of Siale’uvea, who was also known as Charlie by family and friends. “This was very tragic.”
