daniel-gomezThe Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is offering a $10K reward for information leading to the arrest of the hit-and-run driver who killed 20-year-old Daniel Gomez in Long Beach in September. This follows a community campaign led by his mother, Rosi, to help find the driver.

Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers arrived on the scene at about 12:11AM on September 13 to find an unconscious man, later identified as Gomez, lying in the street 115 feet past the initial area of impact. Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported Gomez to a local hospital where he had succumbed to major injuries and was pronounced dead.

A preliminary investigation found that Gomez was walking across Spring St. outside of a crosswalk when he was struck by a 2011-2014 silver Honda Fit traveling west on Spring. After hitting the victim, the vehicle left more than 107 feet of locked-wheel skids before fleeing the scene, according to the LBPD.

The driver of the Honda has not yet been identified and is not in custody, authorities stated. As such, it has yet to be determined whether alcohol was a factor in the collision.

Police said the driver’s side of the car should have damage to its front bumper and hood, a broken headlamp, and a broken or missing side mirror housing. There also may be damage to the windshield.

Anyone with information which could lead to the identification of the hit-and-run driver is urged to call LBPD detective Steve Fox at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling 800-222-TIPS (8477), texting TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.

Supervisor Don Knabe, who recommended the reward, said witnesses could remain anonymous.
