UPDATE | Capital murder charges were filed Tuesday against Jamie Williams, 43, accused of fatally shooting his stepfather and a teenage girl whose mother survived the attack in Compton. Williams pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

He is due back in a Compton courtroom Oct. 24, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to require him to stand trial.

10/1/18 at 3:10 p.m. | A former Cal State Long Beach employee shot two people to death in Compton Friday evening not long after police had been searching for him on campus, according to authorities.

Deputies arrested 43-year-old Jamie Williams after he ran naked from a home in Compton where he’d shot three family members including a 13-year-old girl and 65-year-old man who died from their wounds, according to authorities.

Not long before the shooting, Williams had been at CSULB, according to campus police chief Fernando Solorzano. Police got a call Friday about a disgruntled man they later determined to be Williams, the chief said in a statement sent to the campus Monday morning.

“Although campus police searched for this individual, we were unable to locate him for questioning,” Solorzano said. “During this period, however, no one on our campus was harmed.”

Williams worked in maintenance for CSULB’s Associated Students, Inc. from October last year until March when he chose to leave the job, according to Terri Carbaugh, a campus spokeswoman.

Solorzano’s statement didn’t say what time Friday Williams was on campus. The shooting in Compton was reported at 6 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of West Palmer Street, Det. Tony Moore of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

When deputies arrived, they found a man and a girl both suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, Moore said.

The victims were identified as Eddie Talley Jr., 65, and Brittany Malone, 13, coroner’s Lt. David Smith said. Another woman had been shot and wounded in the upper torso, police said. She was taken to a hospital in unknown condition.

“My sister was shot twice,” Taylor Murrell, the brother of the wounded woman, told reporters at the scene. “My niece is dead and (my sister’s) husband is dead. (My sister’s) husband’s son shot them all.”

The Sheriff’s Department said they’re still trying to determine a motive for the killings. Campus officials did not immediately provide any details about why Williams may have been disgruntled.

“Since learning that Mr. Williams allegedly murdered members of his family on Friday evening in Compton, the campus began to review the matter,” Carbaugh said. “The purpose of our review is to better understand the connection Mr. Williams has with Long Beach State University and what transpired during the brief duration that he was on campus.”

Williams is being held in lieu of $2 million bail, according to jail records.

“Our team will continue to cooperate with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on this matter,” Solorzano said.
