Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck a woman in West Long Beach.
The collision occurred about 7:20 p.m. Friday at Baltic Avenue and Burnett Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
The woman was walking northbound in a marked crosswalk on Baltic Avenue when she was struck by a white pickup truck traveling southbound and attempting to turn east onto Burnett, police said. The driver continued eastbound on Burnett.
Long Beach Fire Department personnel took the woman to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.
This was the city’s 37th fatal crash this year and the second deadly hit-and-run in the span of just two days. Last year, Long Beach recorded 53 fatal crashes — its highest total in more than a decade — despite elected leaders’ pledge to reduce traffic deaths.
The woman’s identity was withheld pending notification of her relatives by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Her approximate age was not disclosed.
Neither speed nor distracted or impaired driving appeared to be factors in Friday’s collision, according to police.
