A man was handling a homemade gun that was in a lost-and-found bin at Bixby Village Golf Course when it went off, wounding him in the upper body, police said.

Police were initially called to the scene at about 12:40 p.m. Thursday regarding reports of an explosion at the course on Bixby Village Drive.

When they got there, officers discovered the gun, which was made out of a small metal tube with a bullet inside that was able to shoot like a regular firearm, police spokeswoman Shaunna Dandoy said.

The weapon accidentally discharged when the victim was handling it, she said.

The man was shot in the upper body, but the wound was not life-threatening, and he declined treatment from paramedics, according to Dandoy.

“It is unknown at this time who made the firearm or how it ended up in lost and found,” she said.

No other injuries were reported, and police are still investigating.
