A Long Beach man was sentenced to 30 years in state prison after fatally shooting his stepfather in 2013, and assaulting inmates while awaiting trial, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

Joel Torres, 23, was sentenced on November 14 at Los Angeles County Superior Court, after pleading guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter, two counts of assault and one count of mayhem.

In March 2013, Torres shot and killed his 37-year-old stepfather Rogelio Aquirre-Lopez outside of Torres’ home, after an argument with him. The victim died at the scene.

Torres attacked inmates on two separate occasions in April 2014 and April 2016, while in custody.

The Long Beach Police Department investigated the case.
