A man who died at a home on Long Beach Boulevard last week was killed by blunt force trauma to the head, medical examiners have found, prompting Long Beach police to open a homicide investigation seeking to determine who killed him.

Anthony Mercy, 59, died Wednesday afternoon, shortly after rescuers found him in medical distress at a residence on Long Beach Boulevard near 19th Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department

While at the scene, investigators learned that Mercy may have been involved in a dispute or altercation a day earlier near 14th Street Park and Seaside Park in the city’s Washington neighborhood which may have led to the injuries that caused his death, police said.

On Monday, police announced in a news release that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office ruled Mercy’s manner of death was homicide.

“Detectives are asking for the community’s help in gathering additional information,” the LBPD said in the news release. “If anyone observed any altercations in the area of 14th Street Park and Seaside Park on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, or were involved in any altercations with Anthony Mercy, please contact Homicide Detectives.”
