Police early Sunday arrested a man who fired gunshots into the air before ditching the weapon in a trashcan near the Port of Long Beach, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Pico Avenue at 2:17 a.m. after receiving numerous calls of “shots fired,” said Long Beach police spokesman Jason Lehman. When police arrived, they saw a man fleeing on foot and throwing an object—later identified as a loaded firearm—into a trashcan, Lehman said.

“Through their investigation, officers learned gunshots had been fired into the air at this location but no subjects had been hit,” he said.

The gunman was arrested on suspicion of illegally possessing a firearm. Police didn’t immediately provide his name. The incident is being investigated as possibly gang-related, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the LBPD gang detectives at 562-570-7370. Anonymous tips may be submitted through Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
