Officers arrested a man for allegedly attempting to rape a girl at a Denny’s restaurant in the Downtown Long Beach area early Sunday morning, according to Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Allison Gallagher.

At around 1:39 a.m., officers responded to reports of a sexual assault of a minor at 601 Long Beach Blvd. and found that a good Samaritan had become aware of the incident as it was occurring and sought help, according to Gallagher. Several citizens detained the suspect, 33-year-old Jimmie Kirkwood, until police officers arrived on the scene, she said.

Officers discovered that Kirkwood had been stabbed, but police are unsure if he sustained the injuries during the alleged assault or during an unrelated incident, Gallagher said. Kirkwood was transported to a local hospital for his injuries.

Kirkwood was booked on suspicion of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 years old, assault with the intention to commit rape and false imprisonment, Gallagher said. Kirkwood’s bail is set at $100,000.
