A man is in critical condition after being shot Saturday morning near the Los Angeles River bicycle path in Long Beach, police said.

Long Beach Police Department spokesperson Allison Gallagher said that officers responded to reports of a shooting at 11:15 a.m. Saturday somewhere in the area of Anaheim Street and the LA River, less than a mile from Drake Park.

Upon arrival, police say they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. The Long Beach Fire Department arrived and transported the man to a nearby hospital in critical but stable condition, Gallagher said.

Police closed off a small area between the 1300 block of San Francisco Avenue and 800 West Anaheim Street, as well as the LA River bicycle path between Seventh and Anaheim streets, to investigate the shooting. This area is expected to be closed off for the next several hours.

At this time, police do not know the motive for the shooting, nor do they have a suspect.

Gang detectives were responding to the scene to investigate.
