A video circulating on social media shows a naked man being attacked by several people after witnesses say he tried to rape a woman outside of a Cherry Avenue liquor store. Police say the man was taken into custody after the incident and was being held for a mental evaluation.

The incident occurred around 8:53 a.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of Cherry Avenue, according to Long Beach Police Department spokesperson Richard Mejia. When officers arrived, they found a man involved in a fight with an unknown number of individuals, Mejia said.

Police took the man into custody and Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported him to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries, Mejia said. No other injuries were reported.

The footage appears to have been first uploaded as a story on an Instagram account Wednesday morning before quickly spreading. It shows at least seven people fighting the naked man in an attempt to get him off of an individual who was lying on their back across a sidewalk. When the naked man gets up, he appears to plead his case to the people around him but he is chased off, eventually making his way onto the street.

The investigation into the incident—including whether the man was attempting to rape someone—is ongoing, Mejia said.
