Police are looking for the killer or killers after a shooting left a man dead in a neighborhood near Long Beach City College’s Pacific Coast Campus.

Officers responded about 10:10 p.m. Tuesday to a call of a man down in an alley in the 1300 block of East Wesley Drive and discovered a person with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body, according to Lt. Tony Lopez of the Long Beach Police Department.

The victim, 34-year-old Rotha So, was pronounced dead at the scene by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, according to authorities.

One neighbor said he’d heard a rapid string of gunfire around 9:30 p.m.

“I told my daughters, ‘Get on the floor,’ right away,” said the man, who asked not to be named because he lives nearby and wants to avoid any trouble.

He estimated there were 15 or 16 shots.

“It was like a machine gun or something,” he said.

He and other neighbors said they looked outside to see the body in a small dirt alleyway that runs behind a row of apartment buildings on Wesley Drive where many families live.

The man said he helped police go through his security camera video but didn’t see anything of note other than cars speeding through the neighborhood.

Another neighbor said people who aren’t from the neighborhood sometimes hang out and party in the alley.

A motive for the shooting was unknown, and it was unclear if the shooting was gang related, Lopez said. A description of the suspect was not immediately available.
