A 22-year-old woman was killed while apparently crossing the street in Bellflower Sunday evening, but few details were immediately available about what happened.

“The young lady died and that’s basically all the information we have right now,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Carlos Girard.

Coroners officials identified the woman as Samantha Denise Rivera, a Long Beach resident.

The crash occurred a little after 9 p.m. while Rivera was in the roadway on Lakewood Boulevard near Cedar Street, Girard said.

“Sammy was taken away from us too soon,” according to an online fundraiser in her name. “She was strong and an intelligent young woman who had so much to look forward to.”

It wasn’t immediately clear if Rivera was in a crosswalk when she was hit. Girard said the driver stayed at the scene.

Editor’s note: This story was updated with the woman’s name and corrected to accurately identify in which city the crash occurred.
