Long Beach police announced they have arrested two men in Placerville on suspicion of stabbing a man to death in his West Long Beach home more than a year ago.

Authorities said family members had discovered the body of 41-year-old Hernan Cortez inside his motorhome near Harbor Avenue and 15th Street on July 6, 2018.

Police, with the help of U.S. Marshals, arrested 22-year-old Daniel Castro Fernandez and 20-year-old Jason Hernan Cortes on Tuesday. The suspects, who are residents of Corning, Calif., were taken to the Long Beach City jail and held on a $2 million bond.

“Homicide detectives believe the suspects planned to rob the victim and the robbery quickly escalated to murder,” police said in a news release.

The suspect Jason Cortes was a relative of the victim, police said, but it was unclear how they were related.

Detectives presented their case to the District Attorney’s office for filing consideration Thursday.
