A Long Beach man who ran a rehab facility in Los Angeles was sentenced Wednesday to 5 years in state prison after prosecutors said he killed a patient by standing on his chest and blocking his airway with a spoon and tape in 2016.

Jason Aviles, 27, pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter as part of a negotiated deal with prosecutors. He was credited for the approximately two and a half years time served and will finish his five year sentence in state prison, Paul Eakins, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, said.

Aviles faced 25 years to life in state prison when he was originally charged with murder in July 2017.

Aviles ran the Grupo Renacer rehab facility, a live-in alcohol recovery program in Los Angeles. He had no professional medical training, the District Attorney’s office said.

The victim, Jose Sandoval, 60, checked into the facility on August 11, 2016. Four days later, he died of asphyxia after Aviles stood on his chest and blocked his airway, prosecutors said.
