A woman barricaded herself in her West Long Beach home after assaulting her 4-year-old neighbor with a wooden broomstick Tuesday night, according to authorities.

Police said they don’t know why the woman hit the girl, but it happened around 9 p.m. on West 19th Street near Caspian Avenue.

When officers tried to contact the woman, she grabbed a knife and barricaded herself inside her home, LBPD spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

“Officers negotiated with the suspect for a short time before S.W.A.T. was activated to assist in safely taking her into custody,” De Prez said.

She was arrested around 1:30 a.m. and taken to a local hospital to be evaluated, De Prez said.

The 4-year-old was also taken to a hospital to treat injuries that weren’t life-threatening, according to police.

The woman’s identity wasn’t available Wednesday morning because police were waiting for her to be released from the hospital before they booked her into jail, De Prez said.
