The head of the union that represents Long Beach firefighters is asking the city to compensate him for $4,000 worth of electronics stolen from his truck while it was parked at a local fire station.

In a legal claim submitted to the city, Long Beach Firefighters Association President Rex Pritchard says there’s been a string of similar crimes in Fire Station 10’s parking lot.

Police say that since February there have been two petty thefts and one burglary from vehicles at the station, which is on Peterson Avenue near 14th Street, along the edge of Cambodia Town. The vehicle burglary happened on May 31, which is when someone stole a laptop, iPad, other electronics and tax documents out of Pritchard’s truck, he said.

“It’s disappointing,” he said. “You would never think people would do that.”

Pritchard said the parking lot at the station is supposed to be secure, but the thief or thieves have been jumping the fence to gain access.

Police said they’ve cited and then released one person in connection with a theft at the station on May 7. Since the burglary on May 31, no more have been reported, police said.

The Long Beach City Attorney’s office hasn’t yet decided if it will pay out the $4,000 Pritchard says he’s owed, according to Howard Russell, the principal deputy city attorney.
