After months of vocal lobbying by well-organized groups of teachers and parents, the Long Beach Unified School District is trying to get a citywide perspective on when and how campuses should reopen during the coronavirus pandemic.

To do that, the district is conducting a survey about parents and students’ experience with online learning and to help gather data to plan for “future needs, and refine plans for the rest of the school year.”

“Your feedback will help us maintain a focus on academic excellence and equity while ensuring that students receive the social emotional support they need during the ongoing global pandemic,” district officials said in an email to parents.

Parents can access the survey by logging into their ParentVUE account and clicking on the “Surveys” tab on the left side of the window.

Parents are encouraged to complete a different survey for each child. The survey begins with a tab that allows parents to select schools. The district says that responses will be anonymous and that teachers and school administrators will not be privy to individual responses.

The survey is focused on questions about virtual learning and how well it works, but there’s also a “School Cultural Awareness and Action” section that asks questions including “How confident are you that adults at your child’s school can have honest conversations with students about race?”

The deadline to respond is Oct. 30, according to the LBUSD.
