A woman was found dead Thursday night inside an abandoned building in Compton, about half a mile north of Long Beach’s city limits, prompting an investigation by Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives.

Deputies responded about 8:05 p.m. to a call of a possible dead body found inside an abandoned business in the 1800 block of East Alondra Boulevard, near Long Beach Boulevard, according to Deputy Erin Liu of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Deputies entered the building and discovered a woman unresponsive inside, Liu said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coroner’s officials identified her as 27-year-old Emma Melchor. She was homeless, according to authorities.

An autopsy was pending to determine the cause of death.
