UPDATE | A 26-year-old Long Beach man has died from injuries he sustained when a car he was a passenger in spun sideways and struck a light pole on New Year’s Eve, authorities announced.  

Nelson Quinones died from his injuries on Saturday, January 2, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD). 

According to witnesses, the 2010 Honda Civic was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway when the driver—Long Beach resident Marco Antonio Hernandez Alvarez, 23—lost control of the car and it began to spin sideways. The car then slid toward the south curb and collided with a light pole, authorities said.

Hernandez Alvarez was declared dead at the scene.

All occupants, which included an 18-year-old woman and 16-year-old boy, appeared to be wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, officials stated. Quinones and the two other passengers were taken to local hospitals in critical condition. They were all Long Beach residents. 

No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

NOTE: LBPD officials erroneously listed Quinones as 16 years old in an original press release.

1/4/16 at 10:13AM | Authorities have identified the 23-year-old Long Beach man killed on New Year’s Eve when his car skidded sideways into a light pole. 

According to the coroner’s office, Marco Antonio Hernandez Alvarez was declared dead at the scene after he lost control of his 2010 Honda Civic while driving eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway and eventually struck a light pole at about 10:45PM on New Year’s Eve.

Three passengers, including an 18-year-old woman and two 16-year-old boys, were taken to area hospitals in critical condition. They were all Long Beach residents.

1/1/16 at 7:26PM | A 23-year-old Long Beach man was killed on New Year’s Eve when his car skidded sideways into a light pole.

According to Long Beach police Lt. Jeff Berkenkamp, the crash critically injured three passengers, who are all Long Beach residents. Officers found a 2010 Honda Civic with major damage on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) around 10:45PM. The driver was dead on the scene, and the three passengers were transported to a local hospital.

According to the police, witnesses saw the vehicle speeding eastbound on PCH, before the driver lost control and the car spun sideways. The vehicle then slide toward the south curb and struck a light pole, police said.

It was not immediately known if the driver had drugs or alcohol in his system, and his name was not immediately released.
