Just like the rest of California, the Long Beach Unified School District saw a surge in coronavirus infections through November.

The LBUSD had 39 coronavirus cases connected to its students, employees or campuses last month, according to its COVID-19 dashboard, which provides daily updates. That’s a big uptick over the first two months of the school year. September and October had 38 cases combined.

Only nine of the 39 November cases were students. The LBUSD has not widely opened its campuses for in-person learning since it closed them on March 13, but about 1,600 students are on campus for preschool or day care programs. The district serves about 70,000 students as a whole.

About 4,000 employees are also working on campuses, according to the district. More than half of teachers opted to conduct virtual classes from their home but administrators and other staff have been on campus. Employees accounted for 24 of the cases in November, with the vendor/other category accounting for the remaining six.

The district is currently planning on opening campuses for in-person learning on Jan. 28, a plan that could change if the current COVID-19 surge does not abate.

The district said it will provide families with an update on its reopening plan in the next two weeks, before its winter break begins.
