The California Academy of Mathematics and Science, a magnet high school in the Long Beach Unified School District located on the campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills, received a significant honor this week.

CAMS was named the top high school in California in the U.S. News & World Report’s rankings, which rank more than 17,700 schools nationwide on a number of data points including graduation rates and performances on state assessments.

“We’re so excited to be named the top high school in California,” CAMS Principal Wendy Poffenberger said in an LBUSD statement. “This ranking is especially meaningful to us because 46% of our students are economically disadvantaged, and our minority student population is 93%.  Our students, their families and our dedicated staff are beating the odds, and they deserve this special recognition.”

CAMS finished just outside the top 10 in the national rankings at No. 11. Other LBUSD high schools including Avalon, Cabrillo, Jordan, Lakewood, McBride, Millikan, Poly, Renaissance and Wilson also made the state rankings.
