2nd District resident and green advocate Stella Ursua has announced that she will vie for the District 3 seat on the Board of Trustees representing Long Beach City College.

Screen Shot 2013-10-28 at 11.16.30 AMAfter unsuccessfully running last year for the 2nd District Council seat against current Councilmember Suja Lowenthal, Ursua has now decided to take on Mark Bowen, who currently holds the District 3 Trustee seat and is serving his second term.

“I want to ensure that both first-time college students and those individuals seeking vocational programs to help quickly build entry-level job skills have the opportunity to complete these courses at our local colleges,” Ursua said in a statement. “We are still looking at 11% unemployment rates in our city and if our city colleges and workforce development programs are not available to the average citizen, we will continue to see staggering unemployment rates and missed opportunities for us to turn our local economy around.”

Ursua is currently the president of the Green Education Inc. Her advocacy in a green economy has been bolstered by her memberships in the California Green Workforce Coalition, US Green Building Council, Repower LA!, Rebuild the US and Green Long Beach!; in addition, she recently launched the Southern CA Green Economic Council. Additionally, she served as the first Green Jobs Coordinator under the United States Veterans Initiative.

Ursua lives with her spouse and business partner, Marcia Tolentino, in Downtown Long Beach.
