The flames started burning shortly after 10 p.m. prompting crews to head to Earl Avenue near 21st Street, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Brian Fisk said.
The unit of the duplex where the fire was burning was unoccupied, according to Fisk, but there were two people in the adjoining unit who managed to get out safely.
Crews made their way into the attic of the home and put out the flames. Nobody was hurt in the blaze, Fisk said, but both units in the duplex were left uninhabitable.
Investigators are still working to determine exactly what sparked the flames.
