A few days after confirming that they’re planning for in-person high school graduations, the Long Beach Unified School District has finalized its schedule that allows more than 5,000 students to attend ceremonies this June.

It’s not entirely clear yet what COVID-19 rules or capacity limits will be in place for the in-person the ceremonies, which are still weeks away. Tickets will be distributed through the graduates, as they normally are.

“Graduations may look a little different, with reduced capacity and other safety measures, but we’re all excited at the prospect of celebrating in person with our graduates,” LBUSD spokesperson Chris Eftychiou said in an email earlier this week.

In all, 5,280 students can attend 15 ceremonies. Last year’s graduations were canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting the district to hold drive-through ceremonies. Graduations are a time-honored tradition in Long Beach dating back to the late 1800s, and Long Beach Poly’s 1921 graduation was the first in California to feature caps and gowns.

The district has also said it will allow for scaled-down promotion ceremonies for elementary and middle schools.

According to the LBUSD, the number of graduates at each school are: 935 at Poly/PAAL; 865 at Wilson; 856 at Millikan; 648 at Lakewood; 449 at Cabrillo; 440 at EPHS; 407 at Jordan; 159 at CAMS; 154 at McBride; 87 at Browning; 84 at Sato; 79 at Renaissance; 76 at Reid; 34 at Avalon; and seven at Beach.
