Lady Washington

Both this weekend and next, two cannon-equipped tall ships will be staging mock battles in the water just off the coast of Long Beach, causing loud blasts that police are saying should not alarm residents.

The brig Lady Washington and the topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftan both arrived in Rainbow Harbor on January 2 and will be staging two-ship cannon battles from 2PM to 5PM on Saturdays and Sundays until they leave January 16 (Lady Washington will be making a brief trip to Newport Beach January 9-11).

The so-called “battle sail,” during which the loud explosions will be heard, is a recreation of a typical 18th century naval skirmish, featuring close quarters maneuvers, real cannon fire with gunpowder (no cannon balls) and an opportunity for guests to take the helm of a tall ship.

Boat tours and family-oriented sailing advantures are on the agenda during the week, presented by the Aberdeen, Washington-based Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Authority, a nonprofit organization that operates the two tall ships. Walk-on tours are free during certain hours and only request a $3 donation. Entrance to the battle and adventure sails are between $39 and $60. The boats are also available for educational programs for K-12 students in Long beach.

Anyone who hears a blast they suspect may not have originated from the mock battles is encouraged to contact authorities by calling 911 or police at (562) 435-6711.
