A 22-year-old Inglewood man was charged Wednesday for the murder of his 1-year-old daughter whose body was found by police Monday evening in the Los Angeles River in Long Beach, officials said.

Jayveyon Burley faces one count each of murder and assault on a child causing death, authorities said. Burley made his initial court appearance Wednesday at Long Beach Superior Court, where a judge raised his bail from $215,000 to $2.05 million, although his arraignment was postponed to Jan. 10. He has not submitted a plea.

“The murder of a child is absolutely horrific. Babies are helpless and rely on their parents for everything. Children should never lose their life at the hands of their father,” District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement Wednesday. “My heart goes out to the surviving family members and everyone who knew this innocent baby girl. While we know there is nothing we can do to heal this extraordinary trauma, we will hold this person accountable for his callous actions.”

Authorities said Burley went to pick up his 3-year-old son and 1-year-old daughter, Leilani, from their mother’s home in Long Beach on Dec. 4. But when Burley arrived at his mother’s home in Inglewood, Leilani wasn’t with him, authorities said.

The Inglewood Police Department was alerted to the missing child when officers responded to a call of an at-risk missing person in the 300 block of North Market Street around 10:44 p.m. Sunday.

Leilani’s body was found the following evening in the LA River in Long Beach, below the Ocean Boulevard bridge, with assistance from the Long Beach Police Department’s Dive Team, according to the IPD and Long Beach Police Department spokesman Brandon Fahey.

The case remains under investigation by the Long Beach and Inglewood police departments.
