McBride Park, one of the oldest park playgrounds in the city, will be receiving some much needed improvements courtesy of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team.

At no cost to the city, the Clippers–through its FIT Campus Playground and Court Refurbishment program–will donate planning, labor, materials and equipment with the approximate value of $90,000 to rennovate the playground and basketball courts at McBride. Replacing aging playground equipment and completely resurfacing the basketball court is the prime objective of this donation and according to the Press-Telegram, all equipment when finished will be painted Clippers red, white and blue.

City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the right-of-entry permits for the program, which will allow the Clippers to begin their work at the Central Long Beach park. Even in the event of unforeseen costs or contingencies for the project, 6th District Councilmember Dee Andrews, who represents the area, has agreed to designate up to $10,000 in Uploads Oil Infrastructure Works to make sure the project is not halted by unforseen costs.

The L.A. Clippers have requested a recognition plaque for the work, but have not asked for any further naming or sponsorship-type benefits to this donation. The project aims to be finished by March 22.

McBride Park is located at 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Click here to read our policies covering city council.
