The Los Angeles Times is reporting that trustees of the California State University system have approved a plan to request $884 million from the state of California in an effort to bolster their weakening financial outlook. Sayeth the Times‘ Carl Rivera:

The budget plan requests $305 million to restore one-time cuts imposed in 2009-10; $283 million to restore money for collective bargaining agreements not funded in 2008-09 and 2009-10; and $296 million for mandatory cost and compensation increases and improvements in student services and instruction.

The CSU system had $584 million pulled from its budget this year by the state, which resulted in CSULB being forced to slash its budget by $42 million. Furlough days and canceled classes soon followed.
Student protestors marched outside CSU headquarters in downtown Long Beach in opposition to cuts that continue to strangle the state’s higher education system.
