It took more than 50 firefighters a half hour to put out a fire at the Landmark Square Building last night after a burned out motor in an elevator shaft malfunctioned, authorities said.

Smoke was reported coming out of the floor from the building located at 111 W. Ocean Boulevard at 7:15PM, said Jake Heflin, spokesman for the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD).

By the time the firefighters found the source of the smoke, the whole 17th floor had filled with smoke. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire a half hour later, and repair crews were called to fix the elevator.

The malfunctioning elevator serves the 16th through 24th floors, Heflin said.
