Long Beach Fire Department crews assisting in battling the Lake Hughes Fire, Friday night, helped save a dozen homes from burning.

“The strike team was assigned to structure protection last night,” LBFD spokesman Jack Crabtree said. “They were accredited with saving 12 homes from burning.”

The fire near Lake Hughes in the Angeles National Forest was first reported at about 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 12, according to the U.S. Forest Service, and has burned 14,714 acres.

Crabtree said LBFD sent out five engines to assist with the fire on Wednesday.

The blaze has destroyed six structures and damaged three others as firefighters prepared to battle flames in extreme heat and low humidity throughout the weekend.

The Lake Fire remained at 12% containment Saturday, Cal Fire reported. Evacuations remained in effect for some residents in those areas and no injuries have been reported.

Forest service crews were battling the blaze this week alongside Los Angeles County Fire Department crews, with assistance from Long Beach, Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterey Park and Santa Monica fire departments.
