With Long Beach schools back in session Wednesday, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) is reminding drivers to practice safe driving.

“With the volume of pedestrian traffic around schools increasing dramatically, all commuters are encouraged to practice the following safety tips in an effort to prevent avoidable accidents,” the LBPD said in a statement.

The LBPD said these driving safety tips include:

  • Yielding the right of way to pedestrians in marked or unmarked crosswalks
  • Not overtaking and passing a vehicle stopped ahead of you when it has stopped for a pedestrian
  • Yielding the right of way to pedestrians on sidewalks
  • Obeying posted speed limits
  • Never driving while distracted – (examples: using a cell phone, reading, applying make-up, etc.)
  • Stopping and remaining stopped for school buses with “flashing red lights;” opposing traffic must also stop unless a painted or raised divider separates the roadway
  • Watching and obeying crossing guards
