Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell honored Lieutenant Commander Terry Geiling as the “70th Assembly District’s 2016 Veteran of the Year,” his office announced today.
According to a release, Geiling was honored for his service at the Long Beach Naval Station and Pearl Harbor Naval Base from 1960 to 1975, as well as his time spent after leaving active duty, as his contributions were far from finished. Upon his departure, he served as the Commanding Officer of a U.S. Naval Reserve Unit and military intelligence manager with IBM.
“Lieutenant Commander Geiling’s accomplishments both on and off the battlefield speak to the strength of his character, tireless work ethic and extraordinary bravery,” said O’Donnell in a statement. “I am pleased to have this opportunity to acknowledge his countless civic contributions and steadfast commitment to defending our country.”
Geiling also helped create a restful environment for residents during his time as President and CEO of the American Gold Star Manor, a senior facility for U.S. veterans and mothers who have lost their children in the line of duty.
He was also a founding board member of the Jonas Project, which helps turn veteran-entrepreneurs into business leaders. Geiling currently serves as the Vice President of a foundation that raised funds to bring Fisher House to the Long Beach VA Hospital.
O’Donnell recognized Geiling for his achievements and presented him with an Assembly Resolution for a lifetime during the 9th Annual Veterans Recognition ceremony in Sacramento.
