A Long Beach liquor store was cited by detectives on Monday for selling a tobacco product to a minor, which was reclassified as a person under the age of 21 following a state law passed earlier this month.

U.S. Liquor, located at 3122 Los Coyotes Diagonal, was the only business that was issued a misdemeanor citation by detectives with the Long Beach Police Department’s Juvenile Investigations detail who conducted the tobacco decoy operation.

A total of 27 establishments were checked, according to LBPD officials.

Authorities said if businesses did not sell tobacco products to minors then they received a thank you letter for abiding the law.

“Long Beach businesses that sell tobacco products are reminded to check for identification prior to making any tobacco related sales and should be reminded that it is NOW illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21,” LBPD officials stated.

The new law went into effect June 9 after it was signed in May by Governor Jerry Brown.
