Long Beach city officials gathered Friday morning at the Police and Fire Memorial for a brief ceremony to remember those who died during the 9/11 terrorist attacks 14 years ago and pay special tribute to those who died in the line of duty across the country.

“Our nation’s police officers, firefighters, and of course the members of our military represent the highest level of service and patriotism,” Mayor Robert Garcia said. “We owe them our gratitude and respect, and today especially, I want to make sure they all know how much we appreciate their sacrifices, bravery, and dedication.”

The ceremony included Mayor Garcia, Fire Chief Mike DuRee and Police Chief Robert Luna.

Those in attendance were able to see a New York Fire Department rescue truck that was restored after being damaged during its use in 9/11 rescue efforts and is now taken to various locations for educational purposes.

A classic 1924 Ahrens-Fox Pumper—which was retired in 1950—was also on display.
