Two people were critically injured early Monday morning after their vehicle struck a tree on the center divider of a Long Beach street, authorities said.

Police responded to the area of Los Coyotes Diagonal and Stearnlee Avenue at about 2:30AM on Monday, September 21 to the single-vehicle car crash.

Officials said the vehicle was traveling northbound on Los Coyotes Diagonal when it struck a tree on the center divider and came to rest in the southbound lanes of Los Coyotes Diagonal.

Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) firefighters used the Jaws of Life tool to extricate the female and male occupants.

The victims were transported to a local hospital and listed in critical but stable condition, Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said.

It is not known what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, officials said.

Witnesses to the collision are asked to contact the LBPD’s Collision Investigation Detail at 562.570.7355.
