12:01pm | A 54-year-old man from Long Beach reportedly died Sunday evening after his vehicle drove off of the road and rolled down an embankment off the southbound I-5 near Los Banos, authorities said.
The Modesto Bee reported that the California Highway Patrol said the man, whose identity was not immediately released pending notification of next of kin, was driving a 2002 Ford Sport Trac in the slow lane just before 5:45 p.m. when traffic on the interstate began to slow as a result of a collision.
After driving onto the dirt and grass shoulder of the road, the vehicle overturned, the CHP reportedly said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the vehicle, a 58-year-old man, was seriously injured. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, the Bee reported.
Officials continue to investigate the accident and could not immediately say whether alcohol played a factor.
