After coming to a halt last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Long Beach Marathon is back on track this year.

The event kicks off on Friday with a free health expo outside the Long Beach Convention Center from noon to 6 p.m. Race events will start on Saturday and will run through most of the day Sunday.

The Aquarium of the Pacific 5k race will begin on Saturday morning at 7 a.m. followed by a second health expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Sunday, a bike tour and marathon will start at 6 a.m. The half marathon follows at 7 a.m.

The event will cause some road closures.

Most road closures and detours will be in place between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday to accommodate the marathon, half marathon and bike tour, according to event organizers.

Roads near the start and finish line on Shoreline Drive will close earlier to allow crews to prepare the venue buildout.

Organizers urged residents to prepare for delays.

Northbound Shoreline Drive from Shoreline Village to Ocean Boulevard will close Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On Sunday, over a dozen road closures will take place from early in the morning to late in the afternoon.

The major closures include Shoreline Drive near the Pike shopping center and the aquarium, Ocean Boulevard along Bluff Park and multiple streets near Cal State Long Beach.

The event this year offers different distance races, a bike tour and a virtual tour for legacy runners who won’t be able to attend or for runners who don’t feel comfortable running in a group.

Event participants will have to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test 72 hours before the race. The test result must be taken no earlier than Thursday to comply with the city’s health orders.
