A Los Angeles man has been arrested in connection to a shooting in North Long Beach that left one person dead last month.

Justin Deshay Jackson, 40, was taken into custody Tuesday evening on suspicion of murder, according to the Long Beach Police Department. He will also face a charge for being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to court records. His bail was set at $3 million.

Police say Jackson shot 36-year-old Michael Toloai on the morning of Aug. 15 following a dispute in the 3400 block of Andy Street. Detectives believe they were acquaintances.

Officers were notified of the shooting around 4:43 a.m. and found Tolai in an alleyway behind an apartment complex in the area, according to a search warrant filed in Long Beach Superior Court. He had been shot in the head, according to the warrant.

Long Beach Fire personnel arrived soon after and pronounced him dead at the scene, according to authorities.

Detectives eventually identified Jackson as a suspect in Toloai’s slaying and presented their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. A Long Beach Superior Court judge then issued a warrant for Jackson’s arrest, court records show.

Officers on Tuesday located Jackson in the 11000 block of Hoover Street in Los Angeles, police said.

It’s not yet clear what sparked the dispute. Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
