A 57-year-old man died Tuesday after being struck by a garbage truck in an alleyway behind a liquor store in Long Beach’s Washington neighborhood, police said.

Police said the incident happened around 1:05 p.m. on Del Rey Court, just north of Anaheim Street.

In a statement today, police said their preliminary investigation showed that a “privately owned garbage truck” was backing up northbound on Del Rey Court when it struck a man who was lying down in the alley.

The garbage truck driver, identified as a 62-year-old Norwalk resident, called emergency services and remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigation, police said.

He was not arrested as “distracted driving, impairment and speed do not appear to be a factor in this collision,” police said.

Long Beach Fire Department first responders pronounced the man dead at the scene. Police believe that he may have been homeless. The identity of the man is being withheld “pending notification” of his next of kin, police said.
