A Walnut Park man died Tuesday afternoon after he was shot in a business parking lot in North Long Beach, police say.

Police responded around 4:22 p.m. to the 6900 block of Paramount Boulevard after reports of at least one person down in a shooting at the parking lot of AJ’s Wholesale Distributors. When officers got to the area, they found the man suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body, according to Long Beach police spokesperson Brandon Fahey.

Officers began life-saving measures before Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived soon after and transported the man to a nearby hospital where he died from his injuries, Fahey said.

The victim was identified Wednesday as 41-year-old Miguel Rodriguez, a resident of Walnut Park.

Homicide detectives that responded to the shooting discovered that the gunman approached Rodriguez in the business parking lot and fired multiple shots directly at him before fleeing the area in a sedan, LBPD said in a statement today. No other injuries were reported.

Customers who were in the area during the incident said they heard up to six shots before a white car with no license plates peeled away.

Police do not have any suspect information, Fahey said. An investigation is underway to determine a motive for the shooting, however, police said Rodriguez appeared to be targeted.

Police urge anyone with information on the shooting to contact detectives at 562-570-7244.
